Via Dell’ Amore

We just returned from an amazing, whirlwind six day trip along the Italian Riviera’s rugged coastline known as Cinque Terre. Cinque Terre, which means “The Five Lands” is comprised of five small coastal villages, Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, all of which are part of the Cinque Terre National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Brennon and I, along with our friends Karen and Hugo, stayed in a cliffside apartment in the quaint little town of Manarola, and while there, discovered a famous walking path between Manarola and Riomaggiore called “Via Dell’Amore” meaning “Pathway of Love” but also referred to as Lover’s Lane.

Until the last century, the Cinque Terre towns were extremely isolated, thus, making it nearly impossible for villagers to travel outside of their communities, much less marry outside of their town. The Via Dell’ Amore was constructed in the 1920′s, connecting the town of Manarola to Riomaggiore, which completely changed the social dynamic between the two villages, making life much more interesting for courting couples. Via Dell’ Amore quickly became established as a lovers’ meeting point for young boys and girls from these two towns. Today, the path is lined with trash and graffiti, but when you stop to take a closer look, you’ll discover sweet love notes and other interesting traditions capturing the love of those who have passed it’s fences and walls, immortalizing the history of the Cinque Terre’s Via dell’ Amore.

As we began our walk down Lover’s Lane, we spotted small padlocks hooked onto a fence overlooking the ocean…

Couples visit Via Dell’ Amore from all over the world to forever seal their love with a lock.

Luckily, we came prepared…

After sealing our love with a lock, together we made a wish and threw the keys to our lock into the ocean.

We continued on, spotting more and more locks {and other things} hung from chain link fences, posts, and railings all along the Via Dell’ Amore.

Not only did we see all types of padlocks, but we also managed to see other interesting items hung along Lover’s Lane, left by unprepared visitors who managed to find anything they had on them at the time to hang, hoping they too could seal their love all while leaving a lasting impression…

We spotted underwear, plastic bags, balloons, bandanas, and even diapers {unused hopefully}!

Another Via Dell’ Amore tradition is to have your picture taken on the Lover’s Bench, a sculpture of a kissing couple.

The passion extends beyond the padlocks, keys, and kisses to declarations of love written on the walls, boulders, benches, and plants along the walk.

Sweet love notes…

Colorful photo op…

Funny notes…

Our love notes…

After we finished leaving our “love” mark on Via dell’ Amore, we found a great spot among the Cinque Terre cliffs to sit with a bottle of local wine and watch the sunset with mio amore

Only time will tell if our love lock & love notes will withstand the wind, rain, heat, and tourists on Cinque Terre’s Lovers Lane, but the promises we made to each other that day will last forever.

Healthy Road Trip Snacks

We are heading off on an eight hour road trip to Italy, literally in a just few minutes, and I have been working all day preparing healthy road trip snacks.  In the past, whenever Brennon and I would leave for a weekend getaway, we would snack on candy and chips that we picked up at gas stations along the way, but in an effort to stay slim & trim before hitting the beach in Italy this weekend, I have come up with nine interesting and easy ways to have delicious snacks while on the road…

All under 100 Calories {per serving of course}

1.  Wraps, a healthy alternative to fast food burgers… I made these wraps with whole wheat tortillas, baby spinach, oven roasted turkey, swiss cheese, and topped with raspberry relish.

2.  Apple Chips: Preheat oven to 200 F; thinly slice apples and sprinkle lightly with a cinnamon & sugar mixture; arrange apple slices in a single layer on parchment paper lined baking sheets and bake for 2 hours or until apples are dry and crisp.

3.  Spiced Oranges:  Sprinkle orange slices with cinnamon and ground nutmeg {peel oranges to reduce the amount of trash you’ll have in the car}.

4.  Trail Mix:  For a healthier version of this popular snack, try making your own… Mix in low sugar cereal, nuts, sunflower seeds, dried fruit, and peanut butter M&M’s {for that hint of sweet}.

5.  Fresh Veggies & Hummus… hummus is a much healthier option for a veggie dip so cut up your favorite veggies {I used celery, baby carrots, cucumbers, and red, orange, and yellow peppers} and enjoy.

6.  Pistachios, the lowest calorie tree nut, make a great snack.

7.  Pickles

8.  Any 100 calorie snack pack.

9.  Caramel rice cakes & apple butter… just like eating caramel apples, but this option is much healthier & just as good!

Well, time to hit the road… Snacks are packed {along with everything else}, so I’ll catch up with you next Thursday!

Try these easy, low calorie snacks next time you head off on a road trip adventure!

Flohmarkte Universitat Vaihingen

Following the recommendation of a fellow expat and flea market junkie on the Design Eur Life Facebook Page, I found myself at the Vaihingen Flea Market this past Saturday, ready to find some deals… in the rain… yes, a die hard junker here!  Armed with 100 Euros {my flea market allowance} and our umbrellas, Brennon and I set off on what would turn out to be a vintage treasure hunt.

After frequenting some of the biggest and best flea markets in Europe, Brennon and I weren’t expecting much from this local neighborhood flea market. We’ve been to plenty like this before, a glorified garage sale with hand-me-down clothes and grandma’s old dishes rather than a flea market full of European antiques and vintage valuables, but we were pleasantly surprised after we began scoping the place out.

The great thing about these neighborhood flea markets is that you can usually find interesting vintage clothing or really nice china sets, all for GREAT prices! Most of the people selling their goods here aren’t antique dealers, who tend to hike up their prices… what you will typically find at larger, more well known flea markets. These are just everyday people that set up here once a year to get rid of the junk that they don’t want anymore.

However, also unlike larger ones, markets like this are always hit or miss; sometimes you will find amazing things that you can’t live without, and sometimes you’ll walk away with a wad of Euros burning a hole in your pocket.

Situated on the Vaihingen University grounds, calling this flea market “small” would be a mistake… there were rows and rows of vendors, most of which we didn’t even have a chance to visit.

We also breezed by an area with picnic tables and bratwurst vendors for those who needed a break from haggling… not me though, I was on a mission…

Some things that caught our eye.

A few hours and 70 Euros later, we made it out with sore arms and heavy bags full of unique treasures…

My favorite thing to do after a flea market run is to unpack the bags we’ve just brought home and start thinking about what I am going to do with them… my husband’s favorite thing to do is to calculate all the money he was able to save by haggling down asking prices.

Here’s how we did…

Vintage Blankets: € 2.00 each

I’m in love with these vintage blankets… They are pretty and functional {best of both worlds}!  We keep a basket of warm blankets next to the door that leads out onto our back terrace for chilly nights spent by the fire pit… I can see myself wrapped up in them already!

Linen dinner napkins:  € 0.50 each & Vintage tablecloths:  € 2.00 each

Amazingly, I was able to find a complete set of six linen dinner napkins along with a matching tablecloth that I fished out of a large cardboard box… I’m picturing a nautical themed seafood dinner this summer!

I also found the cutest tablecloths for our breakfast room that are shabby chic like the rest of our main floor:  I bought one in pink, white damask with pink lace trim, red polka dot, and a blue & white bohemian style tablecloth, which will be perfect for entertaining a group of friends in our backyard this summer.

Vintage nightgowns and gloves:  € 5.00 total & Glass jar:  € 2.00

Ever since moving to Europe, I have began collecting vintage women’s clothing and accessories… most everything I find is really expensive, but at five euros for all three items, I couldn’t pass them up!  They need to be cleaned and a few holes fixed here and there, but nothing too serious.

I have something special in mind for this vintage cut glass jar & lid… stay tuned!

Faded Ceramic Pottery:  € 1.00 & Collection of scarfs:  € 0.50 each {16 total}

I couldn’t resist this faded ceramic bowl for one euro… these make the perfect serving dishes and I’m a sucker for anything faded.

Aren’t scarfs so multifunctional?!  You can wear them as accessories or use them in diy projects!  When I find a beautiful scarf at a great price, I scoop it up because I never know when I may have a new idea for a scarf project.  I have a few that I’m working on now and you will hear all about that shortly!

Red Clutch:  € 0.50 & Yellow Beach Bag:  € 0.50

I stumbled on a box full of purses and so naturally, I had to dig in to see what I could find.  I’m not a huge purse collector but when they’re going for fifty cents, I’d be stupid to pass these up.

Assorted jewelry:  € 5.00

The man selling this jewelry was asking ten euros total for my picks, but luckily, Brennon was able to talk him down to five.  The man was very reluctant to negotiate {as Germans tend to be from what we’ve experienced} but falling victim to Brennon’s persistence, he finally gave in.  Brennon was very proud of himself… persistence pays!

Picnic Bakset:  € 3.00 & Matted Nautical Encyclopedia Page:  € 2.00

Both of these finds fit nicely in our beachy family room.

Deal of the day ~ Coral:  € 22.00

This extremely heavy coral that was such a pain to carry around all day, also turned out to be a great family room addition!  When we asked for the price, I was expecting something high, definitely over 100 Euros, but when she responded with 25, I was shocked.  We ended up negotiating the price down to 22 euros {because you should never pay full asking price at flea markets!} and it now serves as a companion to the rest of our coral collection.

Silver Candlestick:  € 1.00 & Old Beauty Tin:  € 1.00

Thinking about displaying both of these on my makeup vanity… pretty finds!

Children’s Books:  € 1.00 {for all four} & Tarot Cards:  € 1.50

Brennon was most excited about these purchases.  He bought the children’s books to improve his German… one euro to spricht Deutsch… not bad at all!

He spotted the tarot cards and thought they would make a really cool art feature… so creative!  I can’t wait to see what he comes up with!

All in all, I’d say it was a successful Saturday… I mean, all of that for less than 70 Euros, what a deal!  There’s nothing I {we} like more than saving money on cool vintage treasures {Thanks for the recommendation Heather}!

In two weeks, our village of Gärtringen will be hosting their own lively flea market.  Last year, there was a live Country Music cover band and a squad of country line dancers… something you don’t see too often in Germany!  I can’t wait to check it out {and if you’re in Germany, you should come check it out too}!

Weekend Whereabouts

No fun and exciting things to report today as this was a pretty uneventful weekend for Brennon and I.  On Friday night, we found out that Brennon would have to work all weekend, so all plans we had previously made went right out the window.  Luckily, the weather was terrible, so we tried to look at it as taking a needed break from traveling, getting some things done around the house as well as on the blog, rather than a lost opportunity.

Movie Night

We stayed in on Friday and watched movies… a wonderful way to spend a relaxing, rainy evening at home! We ended up renting The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo on Apple TV {how we rent movies here in Europe} since we had heard so many great things about it.  Naturally, we were munching on some movie-watching worthy snacks, which seemed to take all of Dixie’s focus… she wanted some too!  It was so cute seeing her watch Brennon’s every move in hopes that her sweet puppy-dog eyes would persuade him to share… I had to snap a few photos. She eventually got what she was hoping for, a big spoonful of raspberry sorbet, and after that, she fell asleep on Brennon’s arm, too exhausted to carry on begging.

{One thing to note… this time of year, it doesn’t get dark here until around 9:00 pm; so, half of the night, we watched movies in full daylight.  During the summer months, the sun won’t go down until after 11:00 pm… definitely a change from what we’re used to in the States.}

Saturday

{my hansom husband}

{Vaihingen Flohmarkt}

{me, dressed as a bum… one of my flea market strategies}

The next morning, Brennon woke up bright & early and headed off to work… strange… but Marines don’t get days off! {kidding}

To my surprise, Brennon called me around 11:00 am to let me know that he had a few hours to kill during his lunch break.  I had been planning on visiting a large flea market that was taking place near his base and was happy when he agreed join me {Brennon loves flea markets almost as much as I do}!

So to the flea market we went…

A few hours & 70 Euros later, we made it out with some great vintage treasures… this flea market trip was a huge success! {and more about that coming soon}

New Books

Saturday afternoon, while I was waiting for Brennon to get off work, I found myself browsing the Base Exchange {a place I frequent whenever I find myself waiting on Brennon… he knows that if he doesn’t want me spending all of our money, he better not keep me waiting long}!

While there, I picked up some great books:  A beautiful Venetian cookbook complete with recipes and gorgeous photography taken throughout the city of Venice… inside is a delicious Bellini recipe that Brennon and I are looking forward to trying soon!

The second book I purchased, Flea Market Finds, seemed only fitting after having just left a flea market, and besides, you can never have too much inspiration!

And last but certainly not least, Design Magazines… I never can seem to get out of the PX without one {or four or five} magazines! I just love ‘em!

Sunday

On Sunday, while Brennon was at work, I took the opportunity to work on the Blog/Facebook Page… No exciting Instagram photos of that, but I was able to get caught up on a ton of work!  By the time Brennon got home, I was eager to get off the computer, and since it wasn’t raining, we grabbed Dixie and headed out on another one of our daily walks through the German countryside.

Luckily, there were lots of pretty things to snap pictures of during our walk…

Yellow Fields

I finally figured out that the yellow fields I see all over Germany this time of year are full of a plant grown for making Cooking Oil… oh so pretty.

Purple Flowers

In addition to yellow, I sure did see a lot of purple going on today… and I can never snap enough pictures of pretty flowers!

Wishing flowers

As a little girl, I always loved finding these ethereal white orbs.  I’d pick them, make a wish, and blooowwwwww… if all of the little white tufts flew off into the air, then I knew my wish would come true.  Well, it seems like everywhere I look in the German countryside, I see fields of these wishing flowers {dandelions}. Today, as we were out walking, I found the largest wishing flower I had ever seen… I mean huge!  I resisted all urges to pick it and just snapped a few photos… that way it’ll last longer.

Critters

Another fun part of our day was seeing all the little critters walking about… it must just be that time of year.  So I snapped their pictures, thanked them for their cooperation, and left them to go about their day.

Unpredictable Weather

Two miles from the shelter of our home and it started to rain… yes, the sky opened up on us, exactly what I had been hoping it wouldn’t do.  So we picked up the pace to the speed of an olympic mall-walker when we noticed a small hint of a rainbow beginning to take form amongst the clouds.  As we continued walking, the rain dissipated and the rainbow became bigger and brighter, and then appearing as a double rainbow… I tried capturing it on my little iPhone but no such luck, so we just stopped and enjoyed it for a while as Dixie played in the fields.  Despite the unpredictable weather, it turned out to be a great afternoon and probably my favorite of all walks we’ve taken along these same footpaths.  It’s true what they say, after the rain comes the rainbow!

Coming Up…

I could not be more excited about what we have planned this weekend… A trip with our pals, Karen & Hugo, to Cinque Terre, Italy!  I have never been there before but just look at these photos I pulled off Pinterest, it looks absolutely amazing… I can’t wait to see what we get ourselves into over our 5 day road trip to Italy’s colorful coast!

{We won’t be back until Wednesday night so check back next Thursday for this weekend’s edition of Weekend Whereabouts or check me out on instagram ~ designeurlife.}

Turquoise

Like the new look? ———->

Lately, it seems that everywhere I look, I see the color turquoise… in fashion and accessories, interior design, outdoor spaces, and even travel photography. I happen to be a lover of turquoise so if this is the hot new color right now, that definitely works for me {and my blog}!

Brennon & I have been talking about sprucing up our family room… it’s currently decorated in all things beachy; a laid back space to put your feet up and relax, but I’m thinking it needs something more… more color… turquoise perhaps?

I was busy searching Pinterest for inspiration this morning and wanted to share these great photos with you… hopefully, with the weekend upon us, you’ll feel as inspired as I do!

Here’s to being productive this weekend!
